The strong field, together with the many titled players and close ratings of the top participants, make Moscow Open 2008 one of the most exciting tournaments of the year. After five rounds GM Efimenko, GM Volkov, GM Riazantsev, GM Lastin, and GM Oleksienko are leading with 4,5/5. They are closely followed by GM Jobava, GM Kazhgaleyev, GM Inarkiev, GM Zvjaginsev, and 15 more players with 4,0/5.
Upsets in such a strong field are not absent as well. GM Tiviakov is having hard time and is sharing 29th place with 3,5/5. Even worse is the situation of the number one seeded GM Akopian, who is out of the top 50 with 3,0/5. The same points have strong GMs as GM Rodshtein, GM Sutovsky, GM Macieja, GM Vitiugov, GM Iordachescu, GM Burmakin, etc.
